Grannies High Tea Cake

Sift together:
½ lb self-raising flour
pinch salt
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground mixed spice
Melt and simmer:
1/2 lb syrup
5 oz margarine or butter
¼ pint milk
1lb mixed fruit
Remove from the heat. Add a good half teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda dissolved in a little milk. Add to the dried ingredients with 2 beaten eggs. Mix well and put into a well-greased and lined cake tin with some brown paper tied around the outside. Bake in a moderate oven, Gas 4, 180°C for 1 hour reducing to Gas 2, 150°C for a further 45 minutes.
