Wash 1 cup of green split peas and leave to soak for an hour. Drain and boil in a little water with a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of turmeric till soft. Meanwhile in another pan, heat some oil and fry a chopped medium onion, 2 cloves of finely chopped garlic and a one inch piece of ginger, finely chopped, until golden. Stir in ½ teaspoon cumin seeds and 1 teaspoon ground coriander and fry for a few minutes. Add to the dal a few minutes before it is ready. Serve hot garnished with fresh coriander leaf.
